ACCESS Discussion Day - Friday 27th August 2021

We would like to invite you to be part of an ACCESS Discussion Day on Friday August 27th. The aim is to bring together people from across the ACCESS community in an online forum, to talk about the research areas where ACCESS is used (or could be used) and ACCESS developments, both planned and needed. Everyone is welcome, including both ACCESS developers and users, including users of ACCESS model output, and those at all career stages.

Please pass this invitation on to anyone who might be interested.

The likely format for the day will be:

  • 10.00-10.30: Introductory plenary session with short talks on program/institutional ACCESS needs/priorities.
  • 10:45-12:15: Small-group, parallel sessions themed by research area, or spatial/temporal scale. Each group will be asked to complete a template to provide input to the afternoon session, but otherwise the session time is free to be used as needed.
  • 12:30-13:00: Plenary session to report back on the discussion groups.
  • 14:00-15:45: Parallel sessions focused on ACCESS-NRI planning, in groups focused on each anticipated ACCESS-NRI team.
  • 15:45-16:00: Plenary session.

Research Area discussion groups and contacts

Composition-climate ACCESS modelling (Matt Woodhouse)

  • tropospheric aerosol (particularly marine aerosol and clouds)
  • connecting aerosol and clouds / improving the cloud scheme
  • need to model stratospheric aerosol (geo-engineering; next Pinatubo)
  • whole atmosphere chemistry (including stratospheric ozone; hydrogen)
  • connections to other parts of the earth system
  • ease of collaboration with other UM users (in particular staying up to date with UM releases)

Managing carbon / Earth System Modelling (Tilo Ziehn)

  • Research questions / opportunities, for example:
    • Role of Australian land and oceans in mitigation / adaptation and contribution to net-zero emissions
    • Land use and land management, NETs, Geoengineering, carbon sequestration, disturbances, thresholds / tipping points, …
  • New or updated components / configurations required, for example:
    • Dynamic vegetation, fire model, improved representation of ocean and land bgc cycles, non-CO2 greenhouse gases, …

Enhancing ACCESS' research capability (Christian Jakob)

Many modelling centres maintain modelling capabilities that allow the model to be used for fundamental research. Examples are Aquaplanet or Radiative-Convective Equilibrium versions of the atmosphere; The ability to nudge the model towards observations; … We don’t do such capabilities but rather focus on application-ready models. Hence, research using such model versions is either not done or done with overseas models. In this group we should discuss if that is ok, and if it is not, what capabilities we should have and what would be required to build them.

Palaeoclimate (Laurie Menviel, Jo Brown)

  • Existing and planned paleo-experiments
  • Strategies and/or requirements to upscale capabilities
  • Desirable additional/updated components (e.g. dynamic vegetation, Si in oceanic bgc, non-CO2 greenhouse gases…)

From CMIP6 to CMIP7 (Julie Arblaster, Michael Grose, Dave Bi)

  • CMIP for projections - climate sensitivity, large ensembles, spatial resolution
  • Weighting of models, implications for ACCESS(-CM2) as a 'low likelihood, high warming category' model
  • CMIP panel discussion of CMIP7 and input from Australian community
  • Australian ambitions for CMIP7

Coupled Earth System modelling of high latitude regions in the Southern Hemisphere (Petra Heil)

  • Required development of full(er) BGC processes with view to link into atmosphere numerical modules.
  • Coupled ocean-sea ice-BGC-atmosphere modelling: The Marginal-Ice-Zone [MIZ] case study of the DMS pathway from the ocean and sea ice to aerosols and clouds.
  • Metrics for model assessment.
  • The challenge of forecasting versus a balanced system.

Ice sheets and sea ice (Ben Galton-Fenzi)

Simulation and Prediction for the Indo-Pacific (Debbie Hudson, Harun Rashid)

  • Addressing key model biases (atmosphere and ocean)
  • Sensitivity to convection schemes (e.g.,Comorph) and other parameterisations
  • Modelling the Indonesian Throughflow and Maritime continent regions
  • Teleconnections between the Indian and Pacific (ocean and atmosphere) and to Australian climate

Near-surface and land-surface (Pete Steinle)

High-resolution (km-scale) atmosphere (Todd Lane, Chun-Hsu Su)

  • Regional and global atmospheric modelling at km scale for research
  • Challenges and biases (e.g., cloud, rainfall, convection) associated with convection-permitting models
  • Evaluation methods and data
  • Common configurations and community model experiments
  • Idealized configurations to isolate processes

Urban, fire, smoke, dust and air-quality (Charmaine Franklin)

  • What research questions are we trying to answer with these models?
  • What could a 100m-scale urban air quality and fire model look like? What are the important feedbacks to include?
  • How do the limits of predictability impact on the above?
  • How do we evaluate these models?
  • Developments and model configurations required to advance our urban, fire and air-quality modelling research

ACCESS output and data (Chloe Mackallah)

  • Assess the needs of the wider community of ACCESS model output users.
  • Discuss the largest barriers preventing researchers (especially those who do not do modelling) from using ACCESS data (both on the ESGF and raw model output).
  • Determine the balance of interest between the use of CMORised data (CMIP6) and raw model output, and scope any unexpected needs for ACCESS data.
