Automate setup for new users

Reported by: Scott Wales Owned by: Scott Wales
Priority: minor Component: Accessdev Server
Keywords: Cc:

Description

It would be convenient if when a user first logs on to the system it does a number of simple checks, e.g.

  • Can the user see the subversion server
  • Can the user log onto Raijin & back without a password

If the checks fail it should give info on how to fix (or fix autmatically e.g. with the remote-job script)

First time log on should also create a /scratch/users/$USERNAME directory.

hi Scott

#78 seems somewhat different to this ticket ?
This ticket is about doing things for the user.
#78 is more about what the user should be reading, though it does involve pushing the user to do so.

Will you be capturing the specifics of what you wrote in #78 into this ticket ?
They are well worth doing.

The idea of capturing a number of first-time tasks for when users log on is common to both tickets, such as checking if servers are readable & prompting users to fix issues. Having a single ticket makes sense in my opinion

It's something I'd like to look at sometime still.
